Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads or Meta Ads – which pays off more?

Insights

Advertising in the Meta ecosystem offers enormous scope, but it also raises plenty of questions. In this article we look at the differences between Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads and an integrated Meta Ads approach. Who does each option suit? What are their strengths and weaknesses? When is it worth combining channels and when should you run them separately?

1. How do Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads and Meta Ads differ?

Facebook Ads and Instagram Ads are campaigns run in specific channels – both platforms belong to Meta, but their audiences and formats differ. Meta Ads is the term for campaigns run in parallel across all Meta channels: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network. The key differences:

  • Facebook Ads – effective for lead generation, informational and trust-building work. A strong 35–55+ audience, high engagement in comments, links and events.
  • Instagram Ads – a strong channel for e-commerce and lifestyle products. A heavy emphasis on aesthetics, recommended for younger groups (18–34).
  • Meta Ads – allow automatic budget optimisation between channels and greater reach. They do, however, require creatives properly prepared for different placements.

2. How do you match the channel to the campaign objective?

3. What to watch out for in Meta campaigns

  • Not every creative works in every placement – it is worth preparing separate ad versions for stories, feed and reels.
  • The optimisation system may favour one channel (e.g. Facebook) – so you should monitor budget allocation.
  • In e-commerce campaigns it is worth testing separating the channels – e.g. IG Reels and FB Dynamic Ads campaigns separately.

4. An example from the market (campaign owner not named)

Industry: natural cosmetics, goal: sales in an online store.A comparison of results from campaigns run over 30 days:

  • Facebook Ads campaign: ROAS = 310%, cost per purchase: PLN 42
  • Instagram Reels Ads campaign: ROAS = 560%, cost per purchase: PLN 27
  • Meta Ads campaign (combined): ROAS = 490%, cost per purchase: PLN 30

Conclusions: Instagram was the most cost-effective, but Meta Ads allowed a larger volume of purchases at a slightly higher cost. Facebook alone was the least effective, but supported remarketing.

5. How to test channels in practice

  • Launch separate campaigns with identical budgets on FB and IG – compare ROAS and CPA
  • Test different placements and formats (feed, stories, reels)
  • Check which age groups and locations respond better in which channel
  • Monitor the quality of leads/orders from the different sources
  • In purchase-objective campaigns, use product catalogues and dynamic ads

6. Is it worth separating the channels?

Sometimes yes. Especially when:

  • Your target group is mainly younger people (test IG separately)
  • Video creatives work better in reels than on FB
  • You need specific data on each channel's effectiveness

7. Summary

There is no single answer as to which Meta channel is best. It all depends on the target group, the offer, the format and the stage of the funnel. Meta Ads give you scale, but they require precision. Testing and data analysis are the basis of an effective strategy.

8. Checklist: before you start a Meta Ads campaign

  • Do you have a clearly defined goal (purchases, leads, traffic)?
  • Does your creative suit different placements?
  • Have you prepared image/video versions for feed, stories and reels?
  • Is the budget split/tested across channels?
  • Do you have conversion events and a product catalogue configured?
  • Are you running remarketing?
  • Do you know the performance benchmarks for your industry?
  • Do you have a strategy for optimisation and evaluation after 2–3 weeks?
  • Do your ads have clear CTAs?
  • Do you regularly analyse ROAS and cost per conversion by placement?
